Rio de Janeiro maintains its position as Brazil's energy capital

Generating 89 per cent of Brazil's oil and 76 per cent of its natural gas, Rio de Janeiro state rivals major oil-producing nations in output. With US$85 billion in planned energy investments through 2030, the sector is expected to create 70,000+ new jobs.

At the "Power of Rio's Oil" seminar, Energy Secretary Cassio Coelho emphasised the importance of oil and gas, stating that Rio is committed to renewable energy development. If it were a country, Rio would be the 10th largest oil producer in the world, as reported by Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS. Consolidated figures for 2024 from the Rio de Janeiro Department of Finance indicate that oil and gas extraction corresponded to more than 90 per cent of the state's exports, moving about US$42 billion.

The energy hub also leads in biomethane production, sustainable transport (low-emission buses, biofuel highways) and offshore wind projects. With energy comprising 90 per cent of exports and supporting 1.6 million jobs, Rio de Janeiro maintains its position as Brazil's undisputed energy capital while transitioning toward cleaner alternatives.
