BRICS sherpas agree on priorities ahead of summit in Rio de Janeiro

The BRICS sherpas – senior political negotiators from the group's member states – are holding their final round of meetings this week in the lead-up to the leaders’ summit on 6–7 July in Rio de Janeiro. The talks, which begin today, 30 June, and run until 4 July, are taking place in the state capital and aim to shape the discussions that will guide heads of state and government next week.

This third meeting centres on three key issues: health, artificial intelligence, and climate change. Brazil’s sherpa, Mauricio Lyrio, is coordinating the negotiations.

"Diplomacy through international cooperation facilitates access to resources and technologies, such as vaccines in BRICS, bringing tangible benefits to people. Artificial intelligence can also be an ally in combating issues such as climate change and improving health, and this is an area where Brazilian foreign policy is working to create direct and effective results in people's daily lives," Lyrio in an interview with BRICS Brasil.

He also emphasised Brazil’s commitment to making negotiations more focused and results-oriented.

Guided by the central theme of Brazil's presidency of the association, “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”, the 2025 BRICS Summit will be held on 6–7 July in Rio de Janeiro.
