Ethiopian government announces major expansion of cancer care and radiotherapy services
Ethiopia ramps up fight against cancer with new centres, advanced technology, and global partnerships
Ethiopia is taking decisive action to improve cancer treatment, research and radiation therapy, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh announced at an international health conference in Addis Ababa. The move is part of a broader strategy to build a stronger, more inclusive national healthcare system. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
Speaking at the “Rays of Hope” conference co-hosted by the Ministry of Health and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Temesgen outlined Ethiopia’s ambition to create a technology-driven, resilient health sector. “Expanding radiation therapy through the peaceful use of nuclear technology will enhance early cancer diagnosis and ultimately save lives,” he said.
Temesgen highlighted the success of the Health Extension Programme and stressed the need to integrate advanced technologies into cancer care under strong regulatory oversight. He also linked the country’s Green Legacy Initiative to improved public health through environmental sustainability. The Deputy Prime Minister urged development partners to support the transformation of global health systems beyond financial contributions.
Health Minister Mekdes Daba reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to scaling up radiotherapy services. “New cancer treatment centres are under construction in multiple cities, with a special focus on early detection, particularly in children,” she said. Plans include satellite clinics for paediatric oncology and an updated National Cancer Control Plan aimed at improving prevention, screening, treatment and palliative care.
