Indonesian government launches Village Climate Risk Index to strengthen rural resilience
New index aims to empower villages with data-driven tools to tackle climate risks and promote sustainable growth
The Indonesian government has taken a significant step to enhance the climate resilience of rural areas by launching the Village Climate Risk Index (IRID) in Karawang district, West Java. This is reported by Antara News.
Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Minister, Yandri Susanto, highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering villages to independently and sustainably manage the risks posed by climate change.
“We want villages to stand resilient in the face of climate change impacts. To this end, we aim to bolster the capacity of rural regions to manage climate risks in an independent and sustainable manner,” Minister Susanto said during the IRID launch event.
The index is designed to guide the development and execution of programmes targeting key areas such as food security, effective waste management, and the promotion of a green economy.
He stressed that the tool will play a strategic role in shaping a sustainable future for rural communities, especially amid rising concerns over climate change-driven food crises. The index’s scope will extend beyond weather monitoring to incorporate broader risk management.
In support of these efforts, the government has authorised village officials to use part of their Village Funds for climate mitigation projects.
